Digital sovereignty is also needed for self-reliance, says Rajnath
Defence Minister emphasises importance of mastering emerging technologies for national security, self-reliance at Delhi Defence Dialogue
Addressing the growing demands for self-reliance, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said it was not just about manufacturing equipment, but also about achieving digital sovereignty — control over algorithms, data and semiconductors that power modern platforms.
He was delivering the opening address at the Delhi Defence Dialogue, organised by the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (MP-IDSA). Singh highlighted the importance of absorbing and adapting to disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, quantum computing and swarm technology, which are transforming the defence landscape.
At the same event, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan spoke about Operation Sindoor, describing it as a compelling example of modern warfare. He explained how precision strike capabilities, network-centric operations, digitised intelligence and multi-domain tactics were effectively deployed within a compressed time-frame.
General Chauhan said while technology plays an increasingly critical role, the fundamental aim of warfare remains securing victory. He emphasised those who lead in technology would ultimately prevail, noting how rapid innovation, strategic partnerships and organisational transformation are reshaping modern warfare. He also pointed to the impact of emerging technologies, evolving doctrines and shifting geopolitical dynamics on the future of defence.
In his welcome address, the Director General of MP-IDSA, Ambassador Sujan Chinoy, reflected on the transformative role of technology in shaping modern defence capabilities. He noted emerging technologies such as AI, robotics and quantum physics are increasingly becoming key determinants in warfare and national security. Chinoy underscored the importance of balancing foreign technology acquisition with the need for indigenous defence manufacturing, advocating for a self-reliant approach.
