Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Saturday called for a shift in India’s political culture from individual ambition to collective national purpose while addressing the inaugural session of the 15th Indian Student Parliament (Bharatiya Chhatra Sansad).

Speaking on the theme “From Stadium to Statesmanship: What Can Politics Learn from Sports?”, the Speaker drew parallels between sportsmanship and governance, urging young leaders to embrace discipline, teamwork and meritocracy in public life.

“In sports, victory belongs to the team; in politics, true victory must belong to the people,” Gupta stated, adding that the playing field serves as a vital classroom for leadership. He stressed that just as athletes dedicate themselves to keeping the Tricolour flying high, public representatives must work with selfless devotion to uphold the nation’s dignity.

Describing sports as a ‘Sanjeevani’ for modern politics, Gupta highlighted three core pillars: discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship. He emphasised that in a healthy democracy, the Constitution acts as the ultimate rulebook, and political opponents must be viewed as competitors, not enemies. “A captain is tested in a crisis; similarly, a leader’s true mettle is proven when the nation faces a challenge,” he remarked.

Linking his message to the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, the Speaker said the country’s development hinges on youthful innovation and honesty. He asserted that a “Developed India” demands a political culture where merit prevails and manipulation gives way to dedication.

Gupta highlighted the growing role of digital innovation and transparency in administration. “Just as modern sports use video analytics to enhance performance, our governance under PM Modi’s vision is embracing digital innovation to ensure that justice and opportunity reach the last person in the queue,” he said.

Concluding his address, Gupta encouraged students to treat setbacks as opportunities for growth and reaffirmed that when leaders stop playing for themselves and start playing for the “National Team,” India’s rise as a global champion becomes unstoppable.
