The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has implemented extensive safety measures across under-construction Metro corridors in the national capital, with nearly 20 km of barricading and 17 km of LED rope lights and blinkers installed to ensure the safety of vehicles and pedestrians, especially during low-visibility winter conditions.According to DMRC, over 270 trained traffic marshals have been deployed round the clock near Metro construction sites to regulate traffic and assist in the safe movement of vehicles. These marshals play a crucial role during nighttime operations, particularly when heavy machinery and cranes are moved to and from construction zones. Road studs have also been installed near vulnerable points to slow down approaching traffic, along with adequate warning signages indicating ongoing work or diversions ahead. As part of Phase 4 of the Delhi Metro project, DMRC has introduced dedicated “Impact Protection Vehicles” to safeguard both workers and commuters during the movement and placement of heavy machinery on roads. These specially designed vehicles are capable of withstanding the impact of speeding vehicles.

To address reduced visibility caused by dense winter fog, additional fog lights have been installed atop barricades, while workers have been provided high-visibility jackets and helmets fitted with reflective tapes. Where road diversions are required, DMRC has installed clear diversion boards and signage, with plans finalised in consultation with the Delhi Traffic Police.

A three-layer safety system, plastic barriers, sand or water-filled drums, and concrete crash barriers, has been put in place at diversion points. Barricades have also been designed to withstand strong winds and adverse weather, with bottom-heavy structures, ground nailing and interlinked fittings to prevent toppling.

DMRC has also adopted hard barricading using concrete crash barriers made from recycled construction waste, providing an eco-friendly safety solution. To maintain uniform safety standards, traffic management guidelines have been made a mandatory part of contractor agreements, aligned with Indian Road Congress norms.

Despite construction in congested urban areas, DMRC said vehicular and pedestrian movement around Metro sites has remained largely incident-free.
