Former ambassador’s administrative experience expected to strengthen the national capital's governance
Former MP Tarlochan Singh has welcomed the appointment of Taranjit Singh Sandhu as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, describing it as a significant gesture by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In a statement, Singh said the appointment marks a historic moment as it will be the first time that Delhi will have a Sikh Lieutenant Governor.
“Prime Minister Modi has appointed S. Taranjit Singh Sandhu as Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. There is a first time that Delhi will have a Sikh Governor.”
Singh noted that Sandhu has had a distinguished diplomatic career and served India in several important positions. He highlighted that Sandhu previously served as India’s Ambassador to the United States and was given an extension due to his strong diplomatic engagement.
“Taranjit Singh was Indian Ambassador in USA and because of his best diplomatic relations he was given extension in the tenure. In his long carrier he served in many countries and at various coveted posts in Foreign Ministry of India.”
Referring to Sandhu’s family background, Singh said he comes from a distinguished lineage that played an important role in Sikh history and institutions.
“His grandfather Jathedar Teja Singh Samundari led the Gurdwara movement against the British and died while in Jail. Perhaps he is the only one who was recognised by the Sikh community by naming SGPC office, Amritsar as Teja Singh Samundari Hall.”
He further added that Sandhu’s father also held a prominent academic position.
“His father S. Bishan Singh Samundari was the first Vice Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.”
Singh also mentioned the distinguished diplomatic career of Sandhu’s wife.
“His wife Reenat Sandhu also served as Indian Ambassador in many countries.”
