Odisha and Madhya Pradesh have been named the theme states for the 38th Surajkund International Craft Fair, scheduled to be held between February 7 and 23.

This marks the first time that two states have been named the theme states. Both states will get a higher number of stalls to showcase their art during the 17-day event.

The fair is likely to be inaugurated by Central Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Sehkhawat.

Organisers are offering around 90 stalls to craftspersons of the theme states this year. The fair will have around 1,200 stalls, with an expected participation of around 2,000 artisans, besides members of cultural troupes from various parts of the country, including the Northeast.

According to sources in Haryana Tourism, the main organiser of the fair, invitations have been extended to over 45 countries this time, and around 20 countries have already confirmed their participation.

More than 35 foreign nations had participated in the event last year, according to officials.

Sources claimed that both Odisha and Madhya Pradesh had consented to participate as theme states in the event.

The fair began in 1987, and only one state was selected as the theme state every year thus far. Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand, as part of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) group, will have a special pavilion to showcase their art, according to officials. Northeastern states have been accorded the status of the cultural partner this year.

Organisers are set to provide facilities such as smart parking, smart ticketing, and BSNL and Airtel Wi-Fi to facilitate digitised payments.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will be the ticketing partner and will have a completely digitalised information system, which can be accessed on surajkundmela.co.in, the fair’s website.

With the venue spanning across 45 acres, the event will have designated stalls for artisans and craftspersons, a food court and other amenities.

Various commercial organisations are expected to put up stalls at the fair.
