Gurugram cops issue challans worth Rs 82.8L for riding without helmet

The Gurugram traffic police have issued 8,228 challans amounting to Rs 82.88 lakh to offenders for riding two-wheelers without helmet last month.

During special campaigns conducted from April 1 to 30, the traffic police issued 3,549 challans to the tune of Rs 35.49 lakh to those driving without helmet. As many as 4,739 challans amounting to Rs 47.30 lakh were issued to pillion riders for not wearing helmets.

A senior traffic police official said riding a two-wheeler without wearing a helmet significantly increased the risk of severe head injuries in the event of an accident, which could lead to brain damage, skull fractures or even death.

As per the Motor Vehicles Act, riding a two-wheeler without a helmet is a traffic violation, resulting in a fine of Rs 1,000 and potential licence suspension for three months.

“A special drive was conducted by the traffic police in April against the offenders driving without helmet. We organised special awareness campaigns for motorists. Still drivers do not follow traffic rules. Strict action will be taken against those not following the traffic norms,” said Prateek Gahlot, DCP Traffic.
