Gurugram MC launches sanitation security force to tackle waste management issues

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has established a dedicated Sanitation Security Force (SSF), consisting of ex-servicemen, to address the growing waste management and cleanliness challenges in the city. Known as the 'Millennium City' due to its rapid urbanisation and flourishing corporate sector, Gurugram has been grappling with a visible sanitation crisis in recent years. This problem led both the state government and local civic authorities to take urgent measures, including declaring a sanitation 'emergency' and setting up the SSF to improve cleanliness for residents.

According to an order issued by Dr Balpreet Singh, Additional Commissioner of MCG, "Ex-servicemen engaged by MCG will be deployed as part of the Sanitation Security Force (SSF) to monitor illegal dumping of Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste and garbage across MCG areas until further notice."

The order further specifies SSF members would ensure no illegal dumping occurs, particularly by private or unauthorised vehicles. They are required to upload geo-tagged photos, videos of unloading vehicles and images of the vehicles to a dedicated WhatsApp group while on duty. The SSF would coordinate with the local police to confiscate and impound vehicles involved in illegal dumping, ensuring legal action is taken.

Dr Balpreet Singh added four zone-based teams have been formed to patrol vulnerable areas of the city, working around the clock in shifts to prevent illegal dumping of C&D waste and garbage.

MCG Commissioner Ashok Kumar Garg stressed the initiative is crucial in fostering civic responsibility and encouraging public participation in sanitation efforts.

In addition to monitoring illegal dumping, the SSF would enforce sanitation laws and regulations. By patrolling high-traffic areas and public spaces, the force would act as a deterrent against unsanitary practices, ensuring compliance with existing sanitation policies and contributing to a culture of cleanliness throughout the city.
