Heatwave likely to continue in Delhi
Relief expected from May 28, says Met Dept
Heatwave conditions are likely to persist in Delhi over the next 24 hours, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting maximum temperatures between 44 and 46 degrees Celsius across the Capital.
According to the IMD, heatwave conditions are expected to abate after May 28 due to the possibility of light rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds over Delhi till May 30. The Weather Department has predicted a dip of 5-7 degrees Celsius in maximum temperature and 3-4 degrees Celsius in minimum temperature after the next two days.
Delhi on Tuesday recorded a maximum temperature of 43.5 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung, 3.1 degrees above normal, while the minimum settled at 26.8 degrees Celsius. Other parts of the city recorded higher temperatures, with Ayanagar logging 44.8 degrees Celsius, Ridge 44.6 degrees Celsius and Palam 44 degrees Celsius.
On Monday, the Capital witnessed its warmest May night in 14 years at 32.4°C.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for May 27 and heatwave conditions have been predicted at isolated places. Delhi is likely to witness partly cloudy skies with light rain accompanied by thunderstorm on May 28, while generally cloudy skies, light rain and thunderstorms with wind speeds reaching up to 60 kmph are likely on May 29. Delhi’s peak power demand reached 8,184 MW on Tuesday amid soaring temperature.
