What began as a nostalgic return to the campus turned into a landmark moment in alumni philanthropy as 2000 batch of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-Delhi), announced a pledge of more than Rs 70 crore to their alma mater the highest batch contribution in the institute’s history.

The announcement came during the silver jubilee reunion on the IIT-Delhi campus, where alumni from across India and overseas gathered to mark 25 years since graduation. Beyond shared memories and campus walks, the reunion reflected a deeper commitment to giving back, as the batch came together to support the next generation of students and researchers at one of India’s premier technical institutions.

A large portion of the pledged amount will be directed towards IIT-Delhi’s General Endowment, creating a pool of long-term, flexible funding for the institute. The endowment will support a wide spectrum of priorities from strengthening academic programmes and advancing research and innovation to expanding student scholarships, faculty excellence and strategic initiatives aligned with the institute’s evolving needs.

Explaining the spirit behind the contribution, Rohit Dube, alumnus of IIT-Delhi and batch fundraising lead, said, “The IIT-Delhi taught us to keep learning in an ever-changing world. Now is the time to pay it forward and help shape the next generation of scientists, entrepreneurs and technocrats. This was not about the headline number. It was about participation and shared ownership. Our batch wanted to contribute in a way that would create sustained impact over decades.”

The institute hailed the pledge as a powerful reflection of alumni commitment. Prof Nilanjan Senroy, Dean of Alumni Relations, IIT-Delhi, said, “The commitment demonstrated by the 2000 batch reflects the deep sense of responsibility and belonging that IIT-Delhi’s alumni feel towards their alma mater. This exceptional pledge will significantly strengthen the institute’s efforts across research, education and infrastructure, creating long-term impact for future generations. It also sets a powerful example that will inspire future batches to come together in supporting the institute’s continued growth and excellence.”

The Rs 70+ crore pledge places IIT-Delhi’s 2000 batch among the most impactful alumni cohorts in the IIT system. Alumni giving has steadily transformed India’s top technology institutes, funding scholarships, research centres, faculty chairs and modern infrastructure. IIT-Madras holds the record for the largest single alumni donation at Rs 228 crore, while IIT Kanpur’s 2000 batch leads with the highest-ever batch pledge of Rs 100 crore. IIT Bombay’s 1998 batch follows with a record class donation of Rs 57 crore.

At IIT Delhi, the 2000 batch has now set a new benchmark, reinforcing the growing culture of collective alumni action. The pledged funds will be stewarded by the IIT-Delhi Endowment Management Foundation, an independent and professionally managed entity established in 2019 to build a sustainable, long-term endowment in support of the institute’s mission in education, research and innovation.

As alumni philanthropy gains momentum across campuses, the silver jubilee reunion of IIT-Delhi’s 2000 batch stands out as more than a celebration of the past, it marks a decisive investment in the future of Indian science, technology and innovation.
