Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has issued an official circular declaring a viral notification about arranging nikah for couples during Ramadan as “totally fake” and not issued by the university.

In the circular dated February 24, the office of the Registrar clarified that the notification circulating on social media regarding “arranging nikah if any boy and girl found standing together during the holy month of Ramadan” was fabricated. The university categorically stated that “no such notification has been issued by the university authorities”.

The administration further urged people not to believe the viral document, stating, “All are requested not to take it seriously as the same has been circulated to malign the image of the university.” Strongly condemning the act, the circular added, “The university administration condemns such notification. The university has lodged a complaint with the Cyber Cell, Delhi Police.”

The fake notification, dated February 20, had claimed that “standing together in couple (boy and girl) is strictly prohibited” during Ramadan and warned that “if any couple are found standing together, their nikah will be arranged immediately”. It also mentioned that in case of violation, “the couple will be responsible for arranging their own Walima”.
