Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Thursday was briefed on a comprehensive plan to redevelop the city’s transit corridors into vibrant public spaces. Later in the day, he paid a surprise visit to Model Town, reminiscing about his time as a student at Delhi University.
A comprehensive presentation by School of Planning and Architecture Delhi outlined a vision to transform key transit corridors into green, pedestrian-friendly and mixed-use spaces that remain active round the clock. The proposal aims to convert these stretches into hubs of economic activity, recreation and public engagement, aligned with the broader urban rejuvenation vision of Narendra Modi.
According to officials, the plan focuses on promoting tourism, boosting local consumption and generating employment opportunities by redesigning underutilised urban corridors into vibrant public spaces. The project is expected to require close coordination among multiple civic agencies in the capital.
The Lieutenant Governor assured full support in examining the feasibility of the proposal and emphasised the need for seamless inter-agency coordination to ensure effective implementation. Prof. Dr. Virendra Kr Paul, Director of SPA Delhi, presented the framework and key features of the proposed redevelopment.
Later in the day, Sandhu made an unannounced visit to Model Town in North Delhi, a locality closely associated with his years as a student at Delhi University. Walking through familiar lanes, he stopped to enjoy local street food, including chaat and bhalla, while interacting with residents and shopkeepers.
The visit drew warm responses from locals, many of whom were surprised to see the Lieutenant Governor engaging informally in the bustling market. He later returned via the Delhi Metro.
