A young man’s life was cut short early on Sunday when a speeding Mercedes SUV reportedly hit him and his two colleagues outside Ambience Mall in Vasant Kunj here.
The deceased, identified as Rohit, a native of Chamoli, Uttarakhand, worked as a chef at a restaurant inside the mall and earned around Rs 15,000 a month.
According to family members, Rohit was their sole breadwinner. The incident has left them shattered. He had been sending home most of his earnings and saving up to open his own restaurant one day.
The accident took place when the three men were waiting for a vehicle to return to their rented accommodation in Munirka after finishing their shift, on Nelson Mandela Marg. Rohit died on the spot, while two others - Kapil and Lalit – suffered serious injuries.
The news of his death has left the family shattered. His uncle, Balwant Singh, said: “Rohit was a soft-spoken and humble person. He was the only one earning. Our whole family depended on him”.
The police have detained the SUV driver, identified as Shivam (29), and launched an investigation. The body of the deceased will be handed over to family after the post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, the injured persons are undergoing treatment at a hospital, where condition of one of them is stated to be critical.
