Displeased with the deteriorating condition of roads under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Mayor Shelly Oberoi has issued a directive to MCD Commissioner Ashwini Kumar, demanding a detailed status report on road maintenance and construction. The report, addressing the current state of MCD roads across the city, has been asked to be submitted by 5 pm on September 30.

In a letter, Mayor Oberoi expressed her concerns over the poor condition of roads in various colonies across Delhi. She highlighted that the lack of timely maintenance had not only made commuting difficult for the residents but also increased the risk of accidents due to potholes and damaged road surfaces. Additionally, she pointed out that broken roads contributed to air pollution by increasing road dust suspension.

“It has come to my notice that most MCD roads in colonies all over Delhi are in serious disrepair,” Oberoi wrote. “Not only is this making travel difficult for the Delhi residents, but it has also put residents at an increased risk of accidents due to potholes. Besides, broken roads also lead to an increased suspension of road dust, which is a major contributor to air pollution in Delhi.”

“The MCD has kept a budgetary provision of Rs 1,000 crore for road maintenance and an additional Rs 500 crore under the mayor’s discretionary funds for the revamp of MCD roads in the current financial year 2024-25,” the letter stated. Oberoi has now sought detailed information on the funds allocated for road projects.
