Name Metro stations after gurdwaras: Ex-MP to Delhi CM Rekha Gupta
Says long-standing demand once again ignored
Former Rajya Sabha MP and Padma Bhushan awardee Tarlochan Singh has written to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, urging the government to reconsider the recent renaming of Metro stations and include historic gurdwaras in the revised list.
In his letter, Singh expressed disappointment that long-standing demands to name Metro stations after Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib and Gurdwara Bangla Sahib were once again ignored. He said the Chandni Chowk Metro station could have been renamed “Gurdwara Sis Ganj Chandni Chowk,” while the station on Baba Kharak Singh Marg, located adjacent to Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, should reflect the shrine’s name.
Singh noted that both gurdwaras are among the most visited religious sites in the Capital, attracting a large number of domestic and foreign pilgrims. He pointed out that special arrangements, including foreign-language speaking guides, are available for international visitors, and argued that renaming the stations would further promote tourism in Delhi.
Referring to the recent observance of the 350th martyrdom day of Guru Tegh Bahadur, Singh said the Delhi Government had earned goodwill by organising a major programme at the Red Fort and should now take steps to honour the historical and religious significance of the two shrines.
He urged the Chief Minister to issue immediate orders, stating that devotees were disillusioned after seeing the newly announced list of Metro station names.
