On Holi, over 1,200 tipsy drivers challaned in city
The traffic police issued 1,214 challans for drunken driving on Holi across the national capital, an official said on Saturday. Last year, 824 individuals were penalised for drunken driving on Holi.
According to the data, the police issued a total of 7,230 challans for various traffic violations, including 2,376 for riding without helmet, on Friday.
The police deployed additional personnel across key junctions and thoroughfares to conduct rigorous checking of motorists. They were also equipped with breathalysers to check drunk driving.
A senior traffic police officer said they made elaborate arrangements to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists and check incidents of drunken driving, triple riding, driving by minors, riding two-wheeler without helmet and performing stunts on two-wheelers.
The police deployed 84 special drunken driving checking teams and 40 joint checking teams of traffic police and local police.
“These special teams were stationed at various roads and strategic locations/intersections across the city to check drunken driving,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dinesh Kumar Gupta said.
He said of the total challans, 1,214 were penalised for drunken driving, 573 for triple-riding, 2,376 for driving without helmets, 97 for tinted glass and 2,971 for other offences.
