Only semantics at COP-29, says Environment Secy
“We found semantics and not solutions, we found rhetoric and not results,” said Leena Nandan, Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, during an event at the India International Centre in Delhi on Tuesday on the recently concluded COP-29 in Baku.
“That has been the biggest disappointment. That is the feeling that resonated across the developing countries, articulated very strongly by India and supported by developing countries,” she said.
Leena emphasised three core elements while discussing the climate change discussion – Climate Justice, common but differentiated responsibilities (CBDR) and Equity.
On key financial issue, developed nations have committed to mobilising 300 billion dollars annually for developing countries — three times the current 100 billion dollars target. However, this falls significantly short of the estimated 1.3 trillion dollars.
“Where does that leave us given the challenges the whole world faces today?” Nandan questioned. “Precisely, no where,” she said.
On India’s take at the COP-29, she said India led the discussion on Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). India had strongly opposed the CBAM at COP-29, calling it an unfair trade measure that shifts the costs of climate action to developing countries.
