Over four lakh smart streetlights are set to be installed across key parts of the capital in the coming months, as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi partners with E Smart Lighting Solutions to roll out a citywide upgrade aimed at improving energy efficiency, safety and urban infrastructure management.

The project, awarded in September 2025, is currently in the survey phase, with installation expected to begin soon. The rollout would cover multiple zones, including Central, South, Najafgarh and West, with a focus on replacing conventional streetlights with energy-efficient smart lighting systems.

Officials said the initiative aims to significantly enhance visibility on city roads while reducing energy consumption. All installed lights will be connected to a centralised monitoring system, allowing authorities to track performance, detect faults in real time and streamline maintenance operations.

The integrated system is also expected to generate data on energy usage and operational efficiency, enabling improved planning and management of urban infrastructure.

Beyond technological upgrades, officials emphasised the project’s impact on public safety and urban life. Improved street lighting is expected to enhance security, support night-time economic activity and improve accessibility across several neighbourhoods.

Saurabh Aggarwal, Business Head at E Smart Lighting Solutions, said the transformation would be gradual. “There will be no single moment when the city suddenly looks different. Instead, neighbourhood by neighbourhood, the lighting network will quietly evolve,” he said, adding while residents may not notice the technology itself, they will experience brighter and safer streets.

The project is also being positioned as a step towards building smarter urban systems. Officials noted that connected lighting infrastructure could, over time, support additional technologies such as environmental sensors and traffic management systems.

In recent months, the company has also undertaken repair and maintenance work across several South Delhi zones under MCD’s direction to improve reliability and reduce downtime.

Once completed, the initiative is expected to contribute to a more energy-efficient and responsive urban environment, with better-lit streets across large parts of the city.
