Padma Shri awardee Dr Nikhil Tandon takes interim charge as AIIMS Delhi director
Dr Tandon will not receive any additional remuneration or honorarium for the added responsibility
AIIMS Delhi has formally given interim charge of director to Dr Nikhil Tandon following the appointment of Dr M Srinivas as a full-time member of NITI Aayog.
An office memorandum dated April 27 states that under Rule 9(4) of the AIIMS Rules, 2019, Dr Tandon has been asked to look after the functions of the Director, AIIMS New Delhi, in addition to his existing duties. The arrangement takes immediate effect and will continue for six months or until a regular appointment is made, whichever is earlier.
The memorandum adds that Dr Tandon will not receive any additional remuneration or honorarium for the added responsibility.
Dr Tandon is currently professor and head of Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism and dean (academics) at AIIMS Delhi. He is among the senior-most faculty members at the institute and had been widely seen as a natural choice to lead it during the transition.
Born in Delhi on November 28, 1963, Dr Tandon completed his MBBS and MD at AIIMS before earning a PhD from the University of Cambridge. He joined the AIIMS faculty in 1993 and has been with the institute since.
He is regarded as one of India’s leading endocrinologists, with work focused on diabetes, thyroid and metabolic disorders. Over the past two decades, he has contributed extensively to research on cardio-metabolic diseases and public health, with more than 871 research papers and over 100,000 citations.
He was conferred the Padma Shri in 2015 and has also received the BC Roy Award for eminent medical teacher.
With the interim arrangement now formalised, attention is expected to turn to the government’s decision on appointing a full-time director for AIIMS Delhi.
