New Delhi, June 5

Green cover of the city has depleted in the past five years and it’s the duty of every resident to plant at least one sapling to rejuvenate the tree cover. This was stated by Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Sheila Dikshit to mark World Environment Day today.

Dikshit planted a sapling at a park near her house in Nizamuddin East. She said the capital had been gasping for breath due to the increasing levels of air pollution.

She said the 15-year rule of the Congress in Delhi had left behind a green and clean Delhi, but the city became a virtual gas chamber due to the neglect of the AAP government. “The situation can be set right only if every citizen chips in by planting at least one sapling and nurturing it,” she said.

Dikshit said the Congress would start an extensive plantation drive in the capital from June 19, the birthday of Congress president Rahul Gandhi, and the campaign would continue till August 30.

On free Metro and bus rides for women, Dikshit says it’s nothing, but a political gimmick.

Other prominent party leaders present were DPCC spokesperson Jitender Kumar Kochar, party district president Shri Kailash Jain, Harnam Singh, Amanddeep Singh Sudan, Pushpender Srivastav, Adesh Bhardwaj, Rajesh Yadav and Anuj Atri.
