Delhi Budget 2026-27: Rs 9K crore allocated to strengthen water, sanitation facilities

Keeping in focus the strengthening of water supply and sanitation facilities, the government allocated Rs 9,000 crore in the Delhi Budget 2026-27 for Delhi Jal Baord (DJB) that was presented by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.This time also, the allocated budget for the DJB remained similar to that of the Budget 2025-26.

In her budget speech, the CM highlighted that the focus of the government was on reducing the non-revenue water from 45 to 15 per cent and it was also working in the direction of “Har Ghar Nal se Jal” (piped water supply to each house).

The CM also highlighted that to strengthen the city’s water balance, the expansion of 12.7 km of transmission lines and 172 km of distribution pipelines is the target of the government, while it will also focus on increasing water supply by 10 MGD, and providing a further addition of 36 MGD in the near future.

Gupta also emphasised on the expansion of existing infrastructure related to the water supply as a provision of Rs 475 crore has been made in this budget for the work of expansion of Chandrawal Water Treatment Plant and pipeline, which will benefit nine Assembly segments.

Moreover, the proposed Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant water distribution improvement project will benefit 10 assembly constituencies in North Delhi, which is primarily funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the CM said.

Not only this, the government is also focused in the strengthening of the sewage system as the STP capacity will be increased from 707 MGD to 814 MGD and aims to increase the total capacity of STPs to 1500 MGD, she mentioned in the speech.

The Chief Minister told the house that work had already been started by the PWD and related agencies as per the recommendations of the new Drainage Master Plan and recently, the government has approved the construction of drains on MB Road at a project cost of Rs 387 crore to provide relief from water-logging in five assembly constituencies and a provision of Rs 50 crore has been made for this work in 2026-27 Budget.

Gupta also mentioned that the construction of new drains and the restoration of old ones is an example of "innovation in the old". This year, drains will be redeveloped in areas such as Taimur Nagar, Kailash Nagar, Kirari, and Bawana and a budget of Rs 610 crore has been allocated for the Irrigation and Flood Control Department.
