Second Sikh to hold the post after Arjan Singh; outgoing L-G V K Saxena set to take charge in Ladakh
Taranjit Singh Sandhu was sworn in as the 23rd Lieutenant Governor of Delhi on Wednesday, becoming the second Sikh to hold the position after Arjan Singh, who served in the role in 1989.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at Lok Niwas, where Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya administered the oath of office, formally appointing Sandhu as the L-G of the national capital.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, members of the Delhi Cabinet, Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, and MLAs.
From a family of reformists and educationists
Sandhu, 63, hails from an illustrious family of reformists and educationists. Born in Amritsar in 1963, he is the grandson of Teja Singh Samundri, a prominent figure in the early 20th-century Gurdwara Reform Movement that transformed the management of Sikh religious institutions.
In recognition of his contributions, the main hall of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee in Amritsar is named Teja Singh Samundri Hall.
