Indian Youth Congress (IYC) workers staged a protest in Central Delhi on Tuesday, demanding accountability for the stampede at the New Delhi railway station that left 18 passengers dead and many others injured. Alleging that negligence led to the tragedy, the protesters demanded action against those responsible.

Holding placards, the workers raised slogans and attempted to break through police barricades. They expressed anger over the incident and criticised the Railway Minister for his alleged lack of responsibility.

Uday Bhanu Chib, president of the Indian Youth Congress, said: “The Railway Minister is responsible for the stampede. Many people lost their lives due to his negligence. He termed it as a small incident. He should apologise and resign for playing with the lives of people. If even a fraction of the money spent by the BJP had been used to improve public facilities, this tragedy could have been avoided.”

The protest escalated when the workers burnt an effigy of Railway Minister Vaishnaw. When they attempted to march towards Rail Bhavan, the police stopped them at the barricades. They also detained several protesters.

Akshay Lakra, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee Youth president, said: “Many people lost their lives because of the mismanagement by the Railways. Even the death toll was initially concealed. Several such incidents have happened earlier, but Railway Minister did not resign. He should step down and take moral responsibility for the accident.”
