Bangladesh, being led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has witnessed a disturbing rise in violence against its minority Hindu community, with 76 attacks reported in just two months. According to figures shared by India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, 23 Hindus have been killed and 152 temples attacked since August.

The violence escalated following the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024, after unprecedented student protests. Hasina has since sought refuge in India.

India has expressed concerns over the safety of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh, urging the government to take action against those responsible for the violence. During a visit to Bangladesh on December 9, 2024, India’s Foreign Secretary reiterated the country’s expectations regarding the protection of minorities.

The High Commission of India in Dhaka continues to monitor the situation related to minorities closely,” the reply from the minister mentioned.
