Copyright win : Anthropic settlement a wake-up call

LEADING artificial intelligence company Anthropic's offer to pay $1.5 billion to authors and publishers, who claimed it stole their work to train AI models, marks a turning point for copyright holders. A judge ruled that Anthropic had illegally downloaded and stored millions of copyrighted books, making the settlement the largest payout in the history of US copyright cases. It is being viewed as the AI industry's Napster moment. In the early 2000s, courts ruled that file-sharing services like Napster and Grokster were liable for copyright infringement because they enabled users to share copyrighted songs, movies and other material for free on the Internet. Hopefully, there is no going back on strengthening mechanisms that compensate for original contributions.
