New Harry Potter’s Ginny Weasley quits show due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’; HBO to recast role

HBO’s much-awaited “Harry Potter” series will recast the role of Ginny Weasley after child actor Gracie Cochrane exited the show following its first season.

Cochrane and her family shared the news in a joint statement, saying that she had “made the challenging decision to step away” due to “unforeseen circumstances”, according to Variety.

“Her time as part of the ‘Harry Potter’ world has been truly wonderful, and she is deeply grateful to Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for creating such an unforgettable experience. Gracie is very excited about the opportunities her future holds,” the statement added.

In a statement, HBO said it supported the family’s decision.

“We are grateful for her work on season one of the show. We wish Gracie and her family the best,” a network spokesperson said.

In the new iteration of author JK Rowling’s best-selling books, Gracie stars alongside Dominic McLaughlin as well as Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

The eight-episode first season has wrapped production and is set to debut on Christmas 2026 on HBO, with the show available to stream on HBO Max. The second season is currently in pre-production at Leavesden Studios outside London.

Gracie’s character has only a minor presence in the first season, which is adapted from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”. But she has a much more important role in the second season, based on “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”, in which she is tricked into opening a secret chamber in Hogwarts castle and releasing a murderous giant serpent.

The series also stars John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

The role of the main villain, Lord Voldemort, has not yet been cast.

The series is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod serving as executive producer and directing multiple episodes.

It is produced by HBO in association with Bronte Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts and David Heyman of Heyday Films also serve as executive producers.

The decade-long adaptation aims to bring all seven of Rowling’s novels to the screen, with each season corresponding to one book and new seasons expected through 2036.
