Garbage piles up as staff continue strike

Abohar, March 12

With the protest of Abohar Municipal Corporation’s 155 regular ‘safai sewaks’ having entered the tenth day today, heaps of garbage have piled up on main roads, blocking screening chambers in some areas. The garbage had even accumulated outside the MC office complex.

During the “matka phod” protest, the protesters broke pitchers and raised slogans against the administration.

The Safai Sewak Union said the state government had upgraded the Abohar Municipal Council to corporation sans providing it with any additional facilities.

“We don’t have money to buy books for our children and pay their admission fee to private schools,” said union activists.

The main reason for poor fiscal health is said to be the government’s failure to recover about Rs3.5 crore property tax dues. Despite that, no sincere efforts had reportedly been made to collect the same from the defaulters.
