Amritsar, March 19

Guru Nanak Dev University South Café, one of the food canteens, at the Guru Nanak Dev University campus was shut down here on Thursday. The action came after a bunch of students were hurt in a clash with the contractors over the issue. Various students at the university alleged that the contractor there was using contaminated water for cooking and washing purposes.

The students lodged a complaint to Academic Affairs Dean who ordered closure of the canteen. “Two days back, one of our fellow students fell ill due to mild food poisoning. He had eaten at the South Café and when we checked the water tanks from which the canteen sourced its water, algae communities were found blooming in it. Today, we went to confront the canteen contractor and he threatened us and even scuffled with us, during which Parikshit, a student, got hurt. He also broke his phone in which he had made a video of the contaminated water tanks,” said Vijay, a GNDU political science research scholar.
