As the state government has made budgetary sanction for rejuvenation of Buddha Nullah in a phased manner, city residents have demanded that the project should be completed on a war footing. They want that funds must be utilised on the project in a transparent manner.

Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal stated in Vidhan Sabha that the government would undertake rejuvenation of Buddha Nullah in Ludhiana in a phased manner. In the first phase, augmentation and refurbishment of sewage treatment facility would be undertaken at a cost Rs 650 crore.

Col JS Brar of Maha Sabha (NGO) said, “A number of projects were announced earlier for making Buddha Nullah pollution free, but nothing was done in reality. We don’t know where funds which were earlier announced or released have been used. Now, the government should ensure transparency in the use of funds sanctioned for rejuvenation of Buddha Nullah. These funds must be used for actual purpose.”

Jagjeet Singh, a city resident, said, “We want that the government should take the issue of polluted Buddha Nullah seriously. Strict action must be taken against factories polluting the nullah. Moreover, the MC should stop releasing its untreated waste into Buddha Nullah. The project for cleaning nullah should be started at the earliest.”

Amarjeet Singh Tikka, Chairman, Punjab Medium Industries Development Board, said, “We welcome the government’s move for rejuvenation of Buddha Nullah.”

Notably, the successive governments have failed to make the nullah pollution free. It is required to be mention that the National Green Tribunal’s monitoring committee has been keeping a close watch on the polluted Buddha Nullah.
