Time to design your career

Manisha Phadke

Design has evolved from branding, products, fashion, technology and service to solutions that combine all of them. The achievement of Udaya Kumar Dharmalingam in July 2010, whose design of the Indian rupee became the official symbol of our currency, is a perfect example of how the field of design is gaining significance and appreciation. The Indian government’s thrust on 'Design' as a subject can be seen on the focus towards design-led manufacturing rather than assembly-led manufacturing in the 'Make in India' campaign. Even the Prime Minister acknowledged that the talent of our youth must be utilised and applied to designing in India at the Digital India launch.

In order to prepare students for addressing complex challenges in the future, institutes have developed outcome-oriented curriculum that offer both practical and theoretical knowledge. A few design schools are offering industry interface opportunities and include 'Technology and Business Management' as main modules, as it has become essential with the changing dynamics globally. A flexible framework is devised to create a student-centered learning mechanism in order to harness the potential of a student.

Connects all professions

The field of design is relevant and co-relates with many fields that are on the rise today. It is finding application in the fields of information technology, hospitality, healthcare, education, tourism. Design, with the inflow of technology is interwoven in our daily lives. The layout of cities, suburbs, villages, the network of aircrafts, trains, buses, logistics, plants, machineries, etc. have to be designed for the smooth functioning of an economy. With increasing aspiration for better alternatives, the design field envisages a huge demand. Study of Design enhances and encompasses fields such as science, arts, engineering and commerce.

Potential ahead

By 2020, the potential market for design in India is expected to be INR 188.32 billion (GBP 1.43 billion).  Only a fifth of the design market is currently tapped. The number of design institutes has considerably grown to over 70 in 2016 from a handful in 2010.  The number of designers required by 2020 in industrial, graphic, communication, packaging and other design domains will be 62,000, provided the design potential is fully realized. Currently there are approximately 7,000 qualified designers in the country and approximately 5,000 students in design education.
