Gurugram sewerage boost: GMDA plans three 100 MLD STPs; Floats tender for Rs 75-cr STP in Naurangpur

The project, estimated to cost around Rs 75 crore, will be developed over 2.89 acres and is targeted for completion within 24 months from the date of the award of the work. The proposed STP is aimed at catering to the growing sewage discharge from Sectors 77 to 80 and adjoining village areas in New Gurugram, where residential and commercial development has accelerated in recent years.

Officials said the plant would use advanced Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) technology along with tertiary treatment systems to ensure high-quality wastewater treatment. The treated water will be reused for non-potable purposes such as horticulture and irrigation, in line with sustainable water reuse goals.

The move is part of a larger expansion plan being undertaken by GMDA to augment the city’s wastewater treatment capacity and reduce the discharge of untreated sewage into drains and ultimately the Yamuna river.

“The GMDA is augmenting the city’s sewage treatment capacity keeping in view the long-term population growth and urban expansion. Infrastructure is being developed to meet the growing needs of citizens and strengthen the sewerage network across Gurugram. Additionally, development of these STPs will help curb the discharge of untreated sewage into drains and ultimately into the Yamuna,” said Hemant Kumar, Chief Engineer, GMDA.

Apart from the Naurangpur project, the GMDA had last month floated a tender for the development of a much larger 100 MLD STP at Behrampur. Two additional 100 MLD STPs are also proposed at Dhanwapur and Sector 107, for which tenders are expected to be floated shortly.

According to the GMDA’s background note, Gurugram currently has seven STPs with a combined treatment capacity of 433 MLD functioning across four locations — Behrampur (170 MLD), Dhanwapur (218 MLD), Jahajgarh (20 MLD), and Manesar (25 MLD).

At present, sewage from Sectors 1 to 23 and Sectors 34 and 37 is treated at the Dhanwapur STP, while sewage from Sectors 24 to 67 is diverted to the Behrampur STP. Sewage from Sectors 68 to 76 is also proposed to be treated at Behrampur. Meanwhile, sewage from Jahajgarh village and surrounding colonies is processed at the Jahajgarh STP, while Manesar and Naharpur Kasan are linked to the STP at Manesar.

With Gurugram witnessing sustained population growth and expansion of residential sectors, officials said the new projects were critical to preventing sewer overflows, improving sanitation infrastructure and ensuring environmentally sustainable urban development.
