Gurugram deputy mayor election 2026: ‘Rao vs Rao’ battle returns as MCG ends 8-month deadlock
Both leaders are backing loyalist councillors for the influential posts to secure their grip on the city's multi-crore development projects
After an agonising eight-month delay, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) is set to elect its Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor on Thursday. The sudden announcement has sparked a political firestorm, turning the city into a battlefield for two of the region’s biggest political titans.
The midnight notification
The Haryana government ended the long wait by issuing an official notification late on Tuesday. The timing has left local councillors with less than 48 hours to lobby. Insiders call it as a “strategic short-notice” to prevent poaching.
Election schedule
Date: April 30, 2026
Time: 11:00 am
Venue: HIPA Conference Hall, Gurugram
Chair: Mayor Rajrani Malhotra
The ‘Rao vs Rao’ shadow war
While the BJP holds a technical majority in the MCG house, the real contest isn’t against the Opposition—it’s an internal power struggle between Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh and Haryana Cabinet Minister Rao Narbir Singh.
This rivalry is a sequel to the recent Municipal Corporation of Manesar (MCM) elections. In Manesar, the fallout between the two leaders led to a chaotic scene where supporters of one camp skipped the proceedings, nearly derailing the process. Political analysts suggest the Gurugram election will be a “litmus test” for who truly holds the keys to the Ahirwal belt.
Both leaders are pushing to install their loyalist councillors in these influential posts to secure their grip on the city’s multi-billion-rupee development projects.
Why this election matters
The senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor positions are not merely ceremonial. They are critical for:
- Accelerating stalled projects: Over a dozen infrastructure projects in Gurugram have been in limbo due to the lack of a complete executive body.
- Improving civic services: The new leadership will be expected to tackle the city’s worsening waste management and drainage issues.
- Testing party unity: With the BJP facing internal factionalism, the results will reveal if the party leadership can prevent ‘cross-voting’ by dissatisfied councillors.
Security and preparation
The district administration has finalised arrangements at the Haryana Institute of Public Administration (HIPA) for the election. High-profile attendees, including MP Rao Inderjit Singh and local MLAs, have been formally invited.
