Gurugram issues notice to NHAI over potholes, deficiencies on service roads

The Gurugram administration has issued a notice to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), directing it to repair pothole-ridden stretches and fix deficiencies on service roads across key highway corridors within 15 days, failing which action will be initiated as per rules.

The directive was issued by Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh during the monthly meeting of the District Road Safety Committee and Safe School Vehicle Policy held at the Mini Secretariat. Taking serious note of poor road conditions, the DC instructed officials to ensure that all ongoing construction sites maintain functional service roads. He also ordered regular water sprinkling at dusty stretches to minimise inconvenience to commuters.

Over 62,000 traffic challans in under a month

Data presented in the meeting revealed that between February 24 and March 19, 2026, a total of 62,656 challans were issued for traffic violations. Major offences included 10,001 cases of riding without helmets, 9,820 pillion riders without helmets, 7,179 cases of wrong parking, and 6,018 instances of wrong-side driving.

Additionally, 3,508 challans were issued for not wearing seat belts, 2,586 for dangerous lane changes, 1,624 for overspeeding and 1,533 for drunk driving. Other violations included 1,281 cases of missing pollution certificates, 1,286 for no-entry breaches, 230 for using mobile phones while driving, 67 for red light jumping and 121 school bus violations. Another 17,520 challans were booked under miscellaneous categories. On highways alone, 749 challans were issued for illegal parking, while recommendations have been sent to suspend 1,439 driving licences.

Focus on accident-prone spots, citizen inputs sought

The DC directed departments to identify accident-prone locations and implement corrective measures on priority. He also invited suggestions from citizen members of the road safety committee to better identify ground-level issues and strengthen preventive action.

School zone safety under scanner

Emphasising student safety, Singh instructed the education department to assess road conditions outside all schools and check the availability of essential measures such as speed breakers. Authorities have been asked to prioritise installation of safety infrastructure wherever gaps are identified.
