Peacock run over by car in Gurugram, FIR lodged against driver

After a peacock hit by a car died in the Sushant Lok police station area in Gurugram, a case was registered against the unidentified driver.

According to the complaint filed by Gurugram Wildlife Inspector Charan Singh, he received information that a peacock was hit by a car in front of DLF The Magnolias Club in Sector 42 around 10 am on Friday. He reached the spot with Wildlife Ranger Rajnesh and a team from the Sushant Lok police station also arrived.

The police and veterinarian Rajesh Godara inspected the scene as per regulations. A post-mortem of the peacock was also conducted.

The FIR was registered against the unknown vehicle driver under Section 281 of BNS and Sections 9, 39, and 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, at Sushant Lok police station.

“Efforts are being made to identify the car that struck the peacock by examining footage of CCTV cameras installed near the spot. The driver will be arrested soon,” said Sub-Inspector Satyapal, the investigating officer.

It may be noted that peacock, designated as the national bird of India, is listed under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and killing them is a non-bailable offence.
