Transformer fire plunges Gurugram into darkness, Rapid Metro services hit
Technical teams pressed into service to restore supply and resume train movement
Gurugram plunged into darkness for several hours after the main transformer at a power house reportedly caught fire on Friday, disrupting Rapid Metro services, affecting train operations and causing inconvenience to commuters.
The power was not restored till 10 pm and several residential sectors remained without electricity for hours. With the night temperatures as high as 45 degrees, residents were left sweating. A majority of them took to social media, highlighting the archaic DHBVN services.
The disruption came during the day when passengers using the Rapid Metro corridor faced delays and uncertainty over services. The Rapid Metro is a key feeder link for office-goers in Cyber City and adjoining commercial areas, connecting with the Delhi Metro’s Yellow Line at Sikanderpur.
The incident triggered concern among commuters, many of whom depend on the Rapid Metro for last-mile connectivity between Sikanderpur, Cyber City and DLF Phase areas. Technical teams were pressed into service to restore supply and resume train movement.
Officials are expected to examine whether overload, technical fault or a short circuit led to the transformer fire.
The disruption has again brought to the fore the need for stronger backup systems and regular safety audits of critical transport infrastructure.
