Woman at posh Gurugram society arrested for assaulting house help in viral video: Police
Gurugram police say the incident shown in the widely circulated video had actually taken place on July 24 at the same society, days before the clip surfaced online and triggered outrage
A woman resident of The Camellias, one of Gurugram’s most upscale residential societies in Sector 42, was arrested on Sunday for allegedly assaulting her domestic help in an incident that had gone viral on social media, Gurugram police said.
The accused was identified as Ruchira Sachdeva, 52, a resident of The Camellias. The police confirmed that the incident shown in the widely circulated video had actually taken place on July 24 at the same society, days before the clip surfaced online and triggered outrage.
The Sushant Lok police station had taken suo motu cognisance of the viral video and registered a case under relevant sections after it began circulating on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). During the course of investigation, officers established that the woman seen in the video forcibly stopping and assaulting another woman was Sachdeva, and that the person she assaulted was her domestic help.
Preliminary investigation revealed the domestic worker had quit her job on July 27, days after the alleged assault, following an argument with her employer over work-related issues. Police said Sachdeva was joined in the investigation on Sunday as per procedure and has since been arrested in connection with the case.
Further action, including questioning and legal proceedings, will follow as per rules, police said, adding that the case remains under investigation. No official comments were issued by Sachdeva or her legal team in this regard
The incident had first drawn widespread attention after a co-worker of the domestic help uploaded footage of the assault, which was then widely reposted across platforms, with social media users tagging Gurugram Police and demanding accountability. The video had reignited concerns over the treatment of domestic staff in the city’s gated, high-security residential complexes, with activists pointing to the lack of protection mechanisms available to workers in such settings.
Police had earlier said the domestic worker seen in the video had returned to her home town and, in a written statement, requested that the video be taken down from social media.
With Sachdeva’s arrest, the case marks one of the more high-profile actions taken against an employer in Gurugram over the treatment of domestic help in recent months.
