The proposed first skyway of Faridabad city is still on paper. The proposal mooted in early 2016 has failed to move forward though work is being done on the Smart City project that was launched two years ago.

The work on the skyway, which was originally taken up two and a half years ago, was to start in April 2016. But things did not proceed the way as was expected, say sources in the department concerned. “We have been working on the details of the Skyway project and the estimated funds required, before its submission to the Union Ministry of Urban Development as part of the Smart City detailed project report to be submitted by November mid, but it could not be taken up due to various reasons, including the transfer of the officials concerned and land,” says an official.

DR Bhaskar, Superintending Engineer of the Municipal Corporation Faridabad (MCF), says that the proposal was taken up in 2016 and there had been no progress on it. He is no more the in charge of the project. Earlier it was claimed that while the details of the project and the budget were still to be worked out, the skyway would be constructed in the heart of the city where the problem of traffic congestion was severe. The skyway is proposed to be constructed to link the Metro Rail station and the main railway station of old Faridabad, situated around one and a half kilometers apart. These two spots are at present linked with roads, which remain choked with heavy traffic, as both are located in the close proximity of the National Highway-2, also known as the Mathura road.

Officials say the skyway proposal is part of the Smart City initiative. They had claimed that it was set to provide excellent connectivity and a modern transportation system was the basic requirement of the Smart City project. The inclusion of the skyway proposal has strengthened the claim of Faridabad for inclusion in the list of the Smart City project the total budget of which is Rs 2,601 crore. Every project, including the skyway, must be completed within five years of the launch of the Smart City project, say the officials.

The skyway and the foot over-bridge on the main highway will also support the expansion of the highway to six lanes and the construction of flyovers to ensure signal-free travel on the Mathura road by early next year. NK Katara, Technical Adviser of the Smart City project, says that the skyway project is still on paper and the issue of land availability has hampered its progress. The detailed project report is expected to be ready soon, he adds.

What is a Skyway

In an urban setting, a skyway, also called catwalk or sky bridge, or skywalk, is a type of pedway (pedestrian way) consisting of an enclosed or covered bridge between two or more buildings or spots. It protects pedestrians from weather. The skyways are usually owned by businesses or civic bodies for providing a connection between rail stations and other transport modes with their own footbridges. The length of a skyway can vary depending upon the need.
