The Jhajjar district administration is extending succor to the needy for the past seven months through ‘Sanjhi Madad’, an initiative to help deprived people and instill a sense of charity among the new generation.

Under ‘Sanjhi Madad’, the administration collects clothes, utensils, toys, books, dictionaries, sanitary napkins, slippers, shoes, sports goods and equipment, and eatables like biscuits and distributes them among poor people.

According to information, around 4,000 persons residing in slums, brick-kilns, industrial units and other backward areas in the district have so far benefited from the campaign since January this year. The authorities have decided to stock the library in the district jail at Dulina village with books donated by people under the campaign.

“Besides administrative work, it is also the responsibility of the district administration to work for bringing about a change in the mindset of people and reach out to persons living in tail-end areas of the district. To execute this thought, ‘Sanjhi Madad’ was launched on January 14 on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti. It also aims at developing a culture of donation from meager resources,” says Sonal Goel, Deputy Commissioner, Jhajjar.

She says through ‘Sanjhi Madad’, people who have resources in abundance are encouraged to donate things for poor people. Also, ‘Sanjhi Madad’ camps are being organised at regular intervals to collect things of general use for the needy. The move is also helping the administration to constructively revive and strengthen volunteerism in the district, she adds.

Another official says a monitoring committee comprising the SDM and other officers has been formed to run the campaign efficiently. It  is also tasked with maintaining inventory and strategising camps.

“Youths have also been involved in the campaign to host collection and distribution camps. The administration also holds meetings with the committee members every month to plan collection and distribution camps,” he says. Sonal claims ‘Sanjhi Madad’ is proving useful in building a culture of donation throughout the year. The distribution of material not only creates a direct link between the government and citizens but also ensures support to the last person.

“We are also trying to connect civil society organisations, CSR donations and private persons with ‘Sanjhi Madad’ to help those living in extremely difficult conditions,” says Sonal.  She urges citizens to contribute to this noble cause.
