Government Primary School at the Commando Complex at Newal village in Karnal district has become a model educational institution in the district.

Around two years ago, this school had only three students and the state government had planned to shut it down. But now it has around 150 students, who have a good command over Hindi, English and Sanskrit.

Students can write with both hands, and can arrange the map of India while blindfolded. Besides, they know about all countries and their capitals, and can count up to 100 on tips.

The walls of the school are decorated with murals, poems and educational information. Greenery all around and clean playgrounds are enough to reveal the hard work of the school staff members and employees of the complex. The parents of students also contribute to maintaining cleanliness on the school premises every day.

Sukh Sandhu, a teacher of the school, works tirelessly throughout the week to teach students.  He also emphasises on improving the standard of education. “There were only three students when I joined the school in September 2016. As it was mid-session, local residents were not able to send their wards to our school. But I did not lose hope and continued my efforts to enrol new students. I identified 25 children in slums and nearby villages and started imparting education to them,” says Sandhu.

“We are three teachers in the school, while two others, including my wife, are voluntarily teaching the students,” he adds.

“With the help of the employees of the Commando Complex, we enrolled around 150 students in the school,” says Sandhu.

The school remains open from 8.45 am to 6 pm all days a week. “I devote the whole day to students and I conduct classes all seven days. The students know several shalokas of Bhagawad Gita,” he says.

The school uses innovative teaching methods and material and is showing impressive progress in academics and sports. “Several of our students have brought laurels by showcasing their talent in yoga at the state level,” he says.

“We are happy with the progress of the school. It now presents a different picture,” says Satpal Yadav, an employee of the complex.

Inspector Vedpal Hooda, another employee of the complex, says that it is a proud moment for them that this government school has been transformed into a model educational institution.

Teachers Satish and Kusum are regulars, while Sunil Kumar and Sudesh are teaching voluntarily. They consider teaching students to be a contribution to the humanity.

Krishan Murari, SP of Commando Complex, says that the school is an inspiration for other schools. They can come here to take a glimpse of the work done by the school and the employees of the complex. “I am very impressed with the dedication of the staff members,” he adds.
