A 21-year-old woman was burnt alive and three others were injured after the van they were travelling in caught fire when a Rajasthan Roadways bus rammed into it from behind on NH-44 in Samalkha late Thursday night.
The deceased has been identified as Nishi, a resident of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, who was living with her family in Panipat.
According to sources, Nishi and her family were travelling from Panipat to Bareilly to celebrate Eid. When their van reached Samalkha, it had reportedly halted when a speeding Rajasthan Roadways bus hit it from behind.
The impact caused the van’s CNG cylinder to explode, triggering a fire. Nishi’s leg got trapped in the seat, and she was unable to escape, leading to her being burnt alive.
Police and fire brigade teams from Samalkha reached the spot and brought the blaze under control.
Gulshan Kumar, SHO of Samalkha police station, said the body had been sent to the mortuary for post-mortem examination.
A case has been registered and further investigation is under way.
