In a heart-wrenching incident, a 10-year-old boy was mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs in Shekhpura Khalsa village under the Gharaunda police station limits.

Over 15,000 stray dogs in city

- With over 15,000 stray dogs in Karnal city alone, residents now avoid stepping out at night, fearing dog attacks

- Even public spaces such as Karna Stadium, where athletes train and people exercise, have become unsafe due to roaming dog packs

- Statistics from the District Civil Hospital reveal that 20 to 25 new dog bite cases are reported daily, 70 to 80 anti-rabies vaccine doses are administered every day and 2 to 3 anti-rabies serum injections are given daily

The deceased, identified as Aditya, had gone to retrieve his kite from a wheat field when the aggressive dogs attacked him viciously. His mutilated body was later discovered by his distraught family and villagers.

According to locals, Aditya was the only son of daily-wage labourer Dalip. He had been flying a kite on the occasion of Basant Panchami when his kite drifted into a nearby wheat field. As he ran to fetch it, a pack of stray dogs pounced on him, biting him brutally.

When Aditya failed to return home, his family launched a desperate search. Other children, who had also been chasing kites, recalled seeing stray dogs in the fields, raising fears for the boy’s safety. Following the trail, villagers made the horrific discovery of his lifeless body, with dogs still growling nearby.

Aditya's father, Dalip, was inconsolable, mourning the loss of his only son, who leaves behind two sisters. The shaken villagers demanded urgent action to address the growing menace of stray dogs.

Confirming the incident, Inspector Deepak Kumar, SHO Gharaunda, said, "A group of stray dogs attacked the boy, resulting in his tragic death."

In another alarming incident, a five-year-old girl was attacked by a stray dog in Shaktipuram Colony, Karnal, on Saturday. The increasing frequency of stray dog attacks in both urban and rural areas has left residents terrified and demanding immediate intervention.

Despite multiple complaints, authorities have failed to implement effective sterilisation and control measures.

"Despite repeated complaints, no concrete action has been taken. We demand stringent steps to address the menace," said Malak Singh, a local resident.

With over 15,000 stray dogs in Karnal city alone, public fear is mounting. Many residents now avoid stepping out at night, fearing dog attacks. Even public spaces such as Karna Stadium, where athletes train and people exercise, have become unsafe due to roaming dog packs.

Statistics from the District Civil Hospital reveal that 20 to 25 new dog bite cases are reported daily, 70 to 80 anti-rabies vaccine doses are administered every day and 2 to 3 anti-rabies serum injections are given daily.

The first dose of the vaccine is provided round the clock at the Trauma Centre.

Local residents continue to hold the civic authorities accountable, urging them to take immediate action before more innocent lives are lost.
