Giving details, DSP Rajiv Kumar said that the police team, led by sub-inspector Manoj Kumar, was on patrolling when they received a tip-off about two youths heading towards Karnal city with illegal weapons, allegedly to commit a crime. Acting swiftly, the team set up a checkpoint on Karnal–Munak Road.

As per the sources in the police, the incident took place at around 11.15 pm on Sunday night, when on spotting the police barricade, the suspects attempted to flee on a motorcycle and opened fire at them near the canal bridge. One bullet struck a policeman’s bulletproof jacket, saving his life. Despite warnings, the suspects continued firing, prompting police to retaliate, leading to the arrests. Officials said a bulletproof jacket saved the life of one CIA officer during the exchange.
