Ambala, November 24

The Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department and the police seized 200 bags of urea loaded in a tractor-trailer and a truck here on Monday. The stock was being illegally transported to Punjab.

Two men, Hardev Singh of Moga and Gurmukh Singh of Gurdaspur, have been arrested in the matter.

Virender Kumar, SDO, Agriculture, in his complaint, said there were reports that some people were supplying bags of urea in Punjab illegally from Haryana.

On a tip-off, the toll plaza near Devi Nagar in Ambala was barricaded. The team accosted a tractor-trailer without a number plate. On checking the tractor-trailer, 150 bags of urea were found in it. Tractor-trailer driver Hardev Singh failed produce a bill or any other document related to the stock.

The team also signalled a truck to stop. Its driver, Gurmukh Singh, claimed that sand was loaded in the truck and produced a document to substantiate his claim. But on checking the truck, 50 bags of urea were found. Gurmukh did not have a bill for urea.

The accused were produced before a court, which sent them to a day’s police remand. A case was registered under Section 7 of the Essential Commodities Act, and Sections 420 and 120-B of the IPC at the Ambala Sadar police station.

Sadar police station SHO Suresh said, “The police will interrogate the accused to know about the source of urea and the point of delivery.”
