Deceased was married four months ago & was allegedly tortured for dowry
A 24-year-old woman died by suicide by hanging herself at her home in Vikas Nagar here, just four months after her marriage. The deceased has been identified as Preeti, a resident of Vikas Nagar. She was living in a rented accommodation with her family members.
The family members of the deceased have alleged that she was being tortured by her in-laws for dowry. Following their complaint, the police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the matter.
According to the police, Preeti was married to Deepanshu of Sandal Kalan village in Sonepat district, who works as a welder, on November 30 last year. The family alleged that Deepanshu and his family began torturing Preeti for dowry soon after the marriage.
They further alleged that she was subjected to both physical and mental harassment to meet dowry demands. The family stated that Deepanshu assaulted Preeti on April 8 and later forced her out of the house. She then called her mother, who brought her back to Panipat. The family said she remained in trauma after the incident and later took an extreme step on Thursday night.
SI Subhash, SHO of Sector 29 police station, said that a case had been registered against the in-laws of the deceased under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and an investigation was underway. He added that the body was handed over to the family after the post-mortem examination on Friday. No arrests had been made so far, he added.
