Due to incessant rainfall, which added to the flow of Sirsa-Habri canal, three breaches occurred in the bank of the canal in Nigdhu village, resulted in the flooding of around 250 acres of paddy fields on Tuesday morning.

Efforts to fill the breaches are underway. The revenue department will access the loss on Wednesday.

A farmer noticed a breach of around four to five feet and sounded an alarm. The farmers also reached there. Slowly the breach occurred at two more places.

Naib Tehsildar Anil Kumar along with the police, patwari and JE of the irrigation department have started work to fill the breach with the help of JCB and labourers.

Naib tehsildar said one breach was of around 10 feet, another of 15 feet while the third one was around 30 feet, leading to submerging of fields.

As per the farmers, the repair work of the canal was going on till Sunday near Budhera village and water was released on Monday.

They demanded compensation for the loss they have suffered due to these breaches.

“Farmers of the vicinity have suffered a big loss due to flood so the authorities should give compensation,” a farmer said.

Naib tehsildar said the team members of the irrigation department have stopped water and started filling work.

“The water from the fields has receded and we will access the loss on Wednesday,” he added.
