3 held in connection with seizure of 14 kg opium
The opium was smuggled for Manjeet Singh, who earlier used to work as a truck driver
The CIA-2 unit of Kurukshetra police on Monday informed that it has arrested three men in connection with the seizure of 14-kg opium worth Rs 35 lakh.
The accused were identified as Harinder Pal Singh alias Nikku, Rohit Kumar and Manjeet Singh, residents of Jammu.
Harinder and Rohit were bringing opium in a truck loaded with maize, on the directions of Manjeet Singh.
As per Kurukshetra police spokesperson, on April 13, the CIA-2 unit received information about Harinder and Rohit taking their truck to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand to deliver goods and while returning, they would bring opium, hiding among other goods, to sell in Haryana, Punjab and Jammu.
CIA-2 unit in-charge Mohan Lal said following a tip-off, a check post was established near Pipli flyover and during checking the maize loaded truck was spotted.
During checking, over 14 kg of opium was seized. On being interrogated, Harinder disclosed that they were working at the directions of Manjeet Singh, who earlier used to work as a truck driver.
The market value of the seized contraband is around Rs 35 lakh. A case was registered at Thanesar Sadar police station under the NDPS act.
The accused were produced before a court, which sent them to a 10-day police remand. During the inquiry, Manjeet Singh was also arrested on April 15 and produced before a court, which sent him to a nine-day police remand.
The matter is still under investigation and information about the source and other clients are being obtained, Mohan Lal said.
