Kurukshetra, July 10

The CIA-1 unit of the Kurukshetra police arrested four members of a gang and recovered a cache of arms from their possession after a brief exchange of fire last night.

The suspects were identified as Ankit Rana, a resident of Uttar Pradesh; Lakshay and Nikhil Kumar of Karnal; and Sonu of Kaithal. The police said the suspects had come to Kurukshetra to kill a criminal, Nirmal Bhullar of Ladwa, during his court appearance in a case today. They said during an exchange of fire, Ankit Rana suffered a bullet wound in his foot.

The police said that following a tip about the presence of the criminals in an under-construction building, the CIA-1 unit led by in-charge Surinder Singh reached to arrest the criminals; however, after seeing the policemen, Ankit and Lakshay opened fires. The police said that in response, the CIA team also opened fire, injuring Ankit. He was taken to LNJP Civil Hospital, where he was provided medical treatment and discharged.

Addressing mediapersons, SP Jashandeep Singh Randhawa said, “Some firing incidents came to light in the district over the last few days, following which the teams of CIA and SHOs were instructed to keep a close watch on criminals in the area. Meanwhile, the CIA-1 team got a tip that some anti-social elements are present in an under-construction building at Sector 10. The unit conducted a raid on the building. The miscreant opened fire at the team. In response, the team fired at the suspects. As a result, Ankit Rana suffered a bullet wound in his left foot.”

“We have seized three pistols, two country-made pistols, five magazines, and 28 live cartridges from their possession. During questioning, they disclosed that they planned to kill Nirmal Bhullar during his appearance in court. A case has been registered at the City Thanesar police station. A detailed investigation will be conducted during remand,” he added.

The police said Sonu is wanted in an attempt to murder; Lakshay has Arms Act and assault cases against him; and they added that the records of the other two suspects are being verified. The police said Sonu was involved in the firing of Neeraj Punia at the court complex in Karnal in 2017.

The accused were produced in a court which sent them to eight-day police remand.
