Palwal, July 10

Busting an inter-state racket involving the supply of illegal weapons, the police here today recovered 41 pistols and country-made revolvers from two persons, claiming it to be the biggest seizure of illicit arms in the state so far.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajesh Duggal said here today that a team of cops, led by sub-inspector Hanish Khan, which was on patrol duty in the Hodal subdivision on Sunday morning, received an input that two persons involved in arms smuggling were due to arrive shortly in a vehicle.

With a blockade set up on the road near Dubchik motel in Hodal, the team, which noticed two persons with bags getting down from a truck ahead of the checkpoint at around 7 am, nabbed them before they could attempt to flee from the spot. He said the search of their bags led to the recovery of a total of 41 illegal weapons, including 35 pistols and six country-made revolvers packed in the bags. Besides, 11 magazines of cartridges were in their possession.

Identified as Kilor Singh and Sukhpal Singh, both accused are residents of Barwani district in Madhya Pradesh. They had brought the weapons from there, which were to be supplied to places in Palwal, Nuh and Delhi, according to the SP.

Describing it as the biggest recovery of illicit firearms in the state till date, Duggal said it had surpassed the recovery of 35 such weapons in Panipat district a few months ago. In January this year, the police here had recovered a cache of 13 country-made revolvers from a resident of Nuh district.

Announcing that the accused would be taken on police remand to detect the source and network of the criminals, the SP said appreciation letters and rewards would be given to the team of cops. It was revealed that as many as 168 illegal weapons had been recovered so far this year in the district. A total of 113 accused had also been arrested in connection with 111 cases under the Arms Act since January 1, it was claimed.
