Karnal, December 11

Gearing up for the Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections, scheduled on December 16, the district authorities have identified as many as 30 sensitive booths and 25 hyper-sensitive booths from the 224 booths.

Giving details, SP Surinder Singh Bhoria said they would ensure peaceful elections. “As many as 1,200 police personnel have been put on duty for full-proof security in as well as outside the polling stations,” he said.

“We will set up barricades at 13 points, including the entry points of the KMC”. Besides, the Haryana-UP border would be sealed 48 hours before the polling, the SP said.

He said they would keep a vigil and if anyone was found offering cash and liquor to voters, the witness could call or send a message on 9729990750, a number of the SP security in charge.

“We will ensure a fair and peaceful election in the city. We have initiated a special drive against drugs and bail jumpers from December 1 and have been successful in arresting 13 bail jumpers, recovering 365 kg poppy husk, 16.54 gm smack, 9.28 gm charas, 49.78 gm opium and 584 bottles of country-made liquor”, the SP added.

2 EVMs in each booth

Sushil Malik, ARO-cum-ZA, Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Board (HSAMB), said two EVMs would be used in each booth, one for mayoral candidates and second for candidates for the post of councillor. Earlier, it was planned that a single EVM was to be used for candidates of both posts at each booth. He said to avoid the confusion among voters, the Election Commission had now decided to provide separate EVMs at each booth. The final rehearsal of the EVMs would be conducted on December 12 and the polling would be held between 7.30 am and 4.30 pm on December 16. The counting would be held on December 19 at DAV Senior Secondary School.
