80 films from 38 countries to be screened at Haryana film fest

The four-day 8th Haryana International Film Festival was inaugurated at Kurukshetra University on Wednesday. The festival is being organised by the university’s Department of Youth and Cultural Affairs in collaboration with the Sanskriti Society for Art and Cultural Development, Kurukshetra.In his inaugural address, Swami Gyananand said Indian cinema was a powerful medium that reflected the country’s rich cultural heritage and values.KU Vice-Chancellor (Prof) Som Nath Sachdeva said, “The film festival celebrates cinema as a powerful medium to nurture creativity and promote cultural expression among students.”He expressed hope that the curated films would broaden students’ perspectives on contemporary issues, including environmental protection and other pressing global concerns. Emphasising the educational value of cinema, he noted that such platforms encouraged critical thinking and helped students engage meaningfully with diverse ideas and societal challenges.Justice Lalit Batra, Chairperson of the Haryana Human Rights Commission, said film festivals served as effective platforms for cultural exchange, enabling audiences to understand diverse traditions and perspectives from across the world.Biswaroop Roy Chowdhury observed that the Indian film industry had played a pivotal role in establishing Indian culture at the international level through its distinctive identity.Festival Director Dharmender Dangi said that nearly 80 acclaimed films from 38 countries, representing 26 languages, would be screened during the festival. The selection includes films from India, Vietnam, Morocco and other countries, offering students exposure to global cinema.On the occasion, posters of the upcoming Overseas Film Festival in Vietnam and the Indo-Morocco Overseas Film Festival were also unveiled.Noted personalities from the Indian film fraternity, including actor Anjana Nathan and filmmaker Umesh Shukla, were also present.Cultural performances by students of SD College, Panipat, and artistes from Vietnam added colour to the inaugural session. The inaugural day featured an award ceremony, screenings of feature films and a masterclass by filmmaker Umesh Shukla at the main auditorium, while documentaries and international films were also screened.
