Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav will spice up the poll battle in Ahirwal in the last week of September. They will address poll meetings in favour of outgoing MLA and Congress candidate from Rewari Chiranjeev Rao, son of Ahir stalwart and national president of the Congress’ OBC Department Capt Ajay Singh Yadav.

Rewari is dominated by the Ahir community and a large number of migrant labourers from UP and Bihar also reside here. Many of them are also electors, hence the visit of Akhilesh and Tejashwi would work not only to woo migrant workers and Ahir voters but also boost the Congress’ campaign in Rewari and other constituencies of the Ahirwal region as well, claims a local political observer.

“Both Akhilesh and Tejashwi are our relatives and also among top leaders of the Ahir community. While remaining in power, they have worked a lot for the development of their states concerned. Both have given their consent to come to Rewari for campaign for me but the date is yet to be finalised,” Chiranjeev told The Tribune.

Chiranjeev, who is in the fray for the second time, is attracting public attention through his canvassing style. He is seen trying his hand at the gully cricket to bond with the youth. He also drives a tractor during his poll campaign in the rural areas to strike a chord with farmers.

In his poll meetings, Chiranjeev is targeting the BJP over unemployment, inflation and Agniveer scheme besides potholed roads, insanitary conditions, waterlogging conditions and corruption in local bodies. He is also flagging the issue of the Ahir regiment prominently.

“The formation of the Ahir regiment is not a demand but a right. I have made sincere efforts for that. I not only carried out a signature campaign but also took out a pad yatra to mount pressure on the Centre for its formation. Even after becoming an MLA, I flagged the issue before the Vidhan Sabha. The Congress on coming to power will get a resolution of the Ahir regiment passed from the Vidhan Sabha to send it to the Centre for implementation,” said Chiranjeev while addressing a poll meeting here.
